Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 6. Algèbres stellaires

Let A be a normed algebra. An approximate unit of A is a filter basis F\mathfrak{F} on the unit ball of A such that, for every xx in A, the filter bases xFx\mathfrak{F} and Fx\mathfrak{F}x on A converge to xx, in other words:

limf,Ffx=_{f,\mathfrak{F}}f x= limf,Fxf=x_{f,\mathfrak{F}}xf=x.

If A is a *-algebra, an approximate unit F\mathfrak{F} is said to be increasing if F\mathfrak{F} is a filter basis on A+A_+.

Let A be a *-algebra. We denote by A+⩽1A^{\leqslant 1}_+ (resp. A+<1A^{<1}_+) the set of positive elements of A of norm ⩽1\leqslant 1 (resp. of norm <1<1); these are the Hermitian elements of A whose spectrum is contained in [0,1][0,1] (resp. in [0,1[[0,1[).

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
