Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 6. Algèbres stellaires

Let A be an involutive Banach algebra and jj the canonical morphism of A into Stell(A). The radical of A is contained in the kernel of jj.

Let xx be an element of the radical of A. Then x∗xx^*x belongs to the radical of A, and therefore SpA′(x∗x)={0}('_A(x^*x) =\{0\}(I, p. 5, remark 3). Since SpStell(A)′(j(x∗x))⊂'_{Stell(A)}(j(x^*x))\subset SpA′(x∗x)'_A(x^*x), we therefore have SpStell(A)′(j(x)∗j(x))={0}'_{Stell(A)}(j(x)^*j(x)) =\{0\}, whence ∥j(x)∥2=∥j(x)∗j(x)∥=ϱ(j(x)∗j(x))=0\|j(x)\|^2=\|j(x)^*j(x)\|=\varrho (j(x)^*j(x)) = 0 (formula (2) of I, p. 104), and therefore j(x)=0j(x) = 0.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
