Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 6. Algèbres stellaires

Let ν\nu be a left Haar measure on G and let Δ be its module. The mapping f↦f⋅νf\mapsto f\cdot \nu is an isometric isomorphism of the algebra L1(G,ν)L^1(G, \nu ) onto A (loc. cit.). Thus one may also define Stell(G) as the enveloping stellar algebra of the involutive normed algebra L1(G,ν)L^1(G, \nu ).

Let G be a locally compact group and let ν\nu be a left Haar measure on G. For μ∈M1(G)\mu\in \mathscr{M}^1(G) and f∈L2(G,ν)f\in L^2(G, \nu ), one has μ∗f∈L2(G,ν)\mu*f\in L^2(G, \nu ) (INT, VIII, §4, prop. 6). Let us then denote by γ(μ)\boldsymbol{\gamma }(\mu) the endomorphism f↦μ∗ff\mapsto \mu*f of L2(G,ν)L^2(G, \nu ). The mapping μ↦γ(μ)\mu\mapsto \boldsymbol{\gamma }(\mu) is a representation of the algebra M1(G)\mathscr{M}^1(G) in the Banach algebra L(L2(G,ν))\mathscr{L}(L^2(G, \nu )) of continuous endomorphisms of L2(G,ν)L^2(G, \nu ) (INT, VIII, §4, cor. to prop. 6). On the other hand, γ(μˇ)\boldsymbol{\gamma }(\check{\mu}) is the transpose of the endomorphism γ(μ)\boldsymbol{\gamma }(\mu) (INT, VIII, §4, no3^o3, prop. 8). It follows that γ(μ∗)\boldsymbol{\gamma }(\mu^*) is the adjoint endomorphism of γ(μ)\boldsymbol{\gamma }(\mu), and therefore that the mapping γ:μ↦γ(μ)\boldsymbol{\gamma }:\mu\mapsto \boldsymbol{\gamma }(\mu) is a morphism of involutive algebras of M1(G)\mathscr{M}^1(G) into the stellar algebra L(L2(G,ν))\mathscr{L}(L^2(G, \nu )), called the left regular representation of M1(G)\mathscr{M}^1(G) in L2(G,ν)L^2(G, \nu ). According to INT, VIII, §4, no7^o7, prop. 19, this representation is faithful.

Let jj be the canonical mapping of L1(G,ν)L^1(G, \nu ) into Stell(G). By restriction to L1(G,ν)L^1(G, \nu ), the regular representation γ\boldsymbol{\gamma } defines an injective morphism of involutive algebras of L1(G,ν)L^1(G, \nu ) into L(L2(G,ν))\mathscr{L}(L^2(G, \nu )), called the left regular representation of L1(G)L^1(G) in L2(G)L^2(G). According to prop. 20, there exists a unique morphism γ′:\boldsymbol{\gamma }': Stell(G) →L(L2(G,ν))\rightarrow \mathscr{L}(L^2(G, \nu )) such that γ=γ′∘j\boldsymbol{\gamma }=\boldsymbol{\gamma }'\circ j. One says that γ′\boldsymbol{\gamma }' is the left regular representation of Stell(G) in L2(G,ν)L^2(G, \nu ). By abuse of notation, we shall again write

γ′(φ)(f)=φ∗f(7) \boldsymbol{\gamma }'(\varphi )(f) =\varphi *f \tag{7}

for f∈L2(G,ν)f\in L^2(G, \nu ) and φ∈\varphi \in Stell(G). One has

∥φ∗f∥2⩽∥φ∥∗∥f∥2(8) \|\varphi *f\|_2\leqslant \|\varphi \|_*\|f\|_2 \tag{8}

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
