Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 8. Algèbres de fonctions continues sur un espace compact
With the above notation:
a) The restriction mapping of into is an isometric isomorphism;
b) The algebra is a full subalgebra of ;
c) Every character of is of the form , where is an element of ;
d) The mapping is a homeomorphism of onto ;
e) If is a subset of X, one has if and only if , which is also equivalent to .
The restriction mapping of into is a morphism of Banach algebras such that for every function . Let . Let . Since is holomorphic in a neighbourhood of the bounded open set , the maximum principle (VAR, I, p. 29) implies that there exists an element on the boundary of such that sup. Since the boundary of is contained in X (lemma 1), it follows that sup. Since this inequality holds for every , it follows that . The morphism is therefore isometric, and in particular injective. Let us now prove that it is surjective. Let . There exists a sequence of rational functions whose poles belong to E which converges uniformly to on X. The are elements of . Since is isometric, the sequence converges in . If is its limit, then and . Hence a).
Let us prove assertion d). Apply prop. 3 of I, p. 144 to the algebra . Assertion b) of loc. cit. implies that the mapping which to associates is a homeomorphism of onto Sp. Let be the identical mapping of . By loc. cit., a), we have Sp Sp. It is therefore enough to show that Sp. The cor. to prop. 6 of I, p. 28 proves that Sp is the union of Sp and of certain bounded connected components of the complement of . Let be one of the bounded connected components of the complement of . The intersection is therefore nonempty. Let ; since , we have Sp. Thus, is not contained in Sp. This shows that Sp.
Moreover, this equality implies that Sp Sp. This establishes condition (iii) of prop. 11 of I, p. 41, applied to the canonical injection of into and to the element . Assertions b) and c) are the equivalent conditions (i) and (ii) of loc. cit.
Assertion d) shows that if . Conversely, suppose that . Replacing by , we may suppose that . By b), the algebra is a closed full subalgebra of , and hence also of . It contains , and therefore . Applying a), we deduce that . Finally, the equivalence of and is a consequence of the definitions.
Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
