If G is generated by a compact subset V, there exists an integer and a discrete subgroup D of G isomorphic to such that is compact.
After replacing V by , we may suppose that V is symmetric; the assumption then means that G is the union of the sets where .
Since is compact, there exist an integer and elements such that . Let be the subgroup of G generated by the family . We have , whence by induction for every integer , and therefore since V generates G. Let then J be a subset of such that the subgroup D generated by the family is topologically isomorphic to , and maximal for this property. Let us show that is compact.
Let be the canonical surjection of G onto . Let . If the subgroup of generated by is topologically isomorphic to , the subgroup of G generated by D and is discrete and the mapping is an isomorphism of onto this subgroup, contrary to the maximality of J. Lemma 1 therefore implies that is compact. Hence is compact
Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
