Théories spectrales, chapter II, § 2. Classification

Let A and B be commutative groups such that A is divisible. Let C be a subgroup of B and φ\varphi a morphism of C into A. There exists a morphism of B into A which extends φ\varphi.

Let O\mathscr{O} be the set of pairs (X,f)(X, f), where X is a subgroup of B containing C and ff a morphism of X into A extending φ\varphi. Let us order O\mathscr{O} by the relation “ X⊂X′X\subset X' and f′f' extends ff ”. One verifies that O\mathscr{O} is inductive. Let (X,f)(X, f) be a maximal element of O\mathscr{O} (E, III, p. 20 , Theorem 2). If X≠BX\not= B, let us take an element bb of B-X and let X′X' be the subgroup generated by X and bb. The commutativity of B shows that X′X' is the set of elements bnxb^nx for n∈Zn\in \mathbf{Z} and x∈Xx\in X. Suppose first that bn∉Xb^n\notin X for every integer n≠0n\not= 0 and define f′f' of X′X' into A by taking an arbitrary element y∈Ay\in A and putting f′(bnx)=ynf(x)f'(b^nx) =y^nf(x) for every n∈Zn\in \mathbf{Z} and every x∈Xx\in X. Since A is commutative, f′f' is a morphism, and it extends ff. Suppose now that there exists n≠0n\not= 0 such that bn∈Xb^n\in X and let m>0m >0 be such that mZ={n∈Z∣bn∈X}m\mathbf{Z}=\{n\in \mathbf{Z}|b^n\in X\}. Since A is divisible, there exists an element y∈Ay\in A such that ym=f(bm)y^m=f(b^m). One then extends ff to a morphism of X′X' into A by f′(bnx)=ynf(x)f'(b^nx) =y^nf(x) for n∈{0,1,...,m−1}n\in \{0,1, . . . , m-1\} and x∈Xx\in X. In both cases, (X,f)(X, f) would not be maximal. Hence X = B and the lemma is proved.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
