Théories spectrales, chapter II, § 2. Classification
The following conditions are equivalent:
(i) G is generated by a compact subset;
(ii) there exist positive integers and and a compact group K such that G is isomorphic to ;
(iii) there exists an integer such that is locally isomorphic to ;
(iv) there exist positive integers and and a discrete group D such that is isomorphic to .
(i) (iii) : if G has property (i), there exists an integer and a subgroup D of G isomorphic to such that is compact (lemma 2). Then , which identifies with the dual of , is discrete (Theorem 4 of II, p. 226 and prop. 18 of II, p. 233). Hence is locally isomorphic to , that is to say to , which is isomorphic to (Theorem 4 of II, p. 226 and prop. 18 of II, p. 233). Now is locally isomorphic to .
(iii) (iv) : if is locally isomorphic to , there exists an integer such that such that the identity component of is an open subgroup isomorphic to (TG, VII, p. 13, Theorem 1). In particular, is a divisible group. We then apply lemma 3 to the identity mapping of the subgroup of the group into the divisible group . There therefore exists a morphism of into which is the identity mapping on . Consequently, we have , and is a projector. It is continuous, since its restriction to the open subgroup is so. It follows that is the direct product of and the subgroup , which is discrete since it is isomorphic to (TG, III, p. 47, cor.)
(iv) (ii) : follows from prop. 2 of II, p. 206, from prop. 18 of II, p. 233 and from corollary 3 of II, p. 236.
(ii) (i) : for every compact group K, the group is generated by the compact set .
Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
