Théories spectrales, chapter II, § 2. Classification

Suppose G compact. Then G is totally discontinuous if and only if G^\widehat{G} is a torsion group.

The group G is totally discontinuous if and only if its connected component is reduced to {e}\{e\}; Prop. 4 shows that this condition is equivalent to BG^=G^B_{\widehat{G}}=\widehat{G}. Since the group G^\widehat{G} is discrete (Prop. 18 of II, p. 233), this amounts to saying that every element of G^\widehat{G} generates a finite group, hence that G^\widehat{G} is torsion.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
