Let $p$ be a prime number. The group $\mathbf{Q}_p$ is not the product of a compact group and a discrete group. (Every compact subgroup of $\mathbf{Q}_p$ is of the form $p^n\mathbf{Z}_p$ for an integer $n\in \mathbf{Z}.$)
