Théories spectrales, chapter III, § 1. Applications linéaires compactes

For every topological vector space E over the field R\mathbf{R}, we denote by E(C)E_{(\mathbf{C})} the complexified topological vector space of E (EVT, II, p. 65). We identify E with a real topological vector subspace of E(C)E_{(\mathbf{C})} by the mapping x↦1⊗xx\mapsto 1\otimes x; the real topological vector space underlying E(C)E_{(\mathbf{C})} is then the topological direct sum of E and iEiE.

Let uu be a linear mapping from E into a separated topological vector space F over R\mathbf{R}. Let u(C)u_{(\mathbf{C})} denote the C\mathbf{C}-linear mapping from E(C)E_{(\mathbf{C})} into F(C)F_{(\mathbf{C})} which extends uu. The sets of the form V+iVV +iV, where V is a neighbourhood of 0 in E, form a fundamental system of neighbourhoods of 0 in E(C)E_{(\mathbf{C})}. In order that the set u(C)(V+iV)=u(V)+iu(V)u_{(\mathbf{C})}(V +iV) =u(V) +iu(V) be relatively compact in F(C)F_{(\mathbf{C})}, it is necessary and sufficient that u(V)u(V) be relatively compact in F. Consequently, in order that the C\mathbf{C}-linear mapping u(C)u_{(\mathbf{C})} be compact, it is necessary and sufficient that the R\mathbf{R}-linear mapping uu be so.

In the same order of ideas, when vv is a continuous C\mathbf{C}-linear mapping from E(C)E_{(\mathbf{C})} into a C\mathbf{C}-topological vector space G, in order that vv be compact it is necessary and sufficient that its restriction to E be compact.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
