Théories spectrales, chapter III, § 1. Applications linéaires compactes

Let E be a seminormed space and F a Banach space of countable type. Let uu be a continuous linear mapping of E into F. Suppose that for every sequence (yn)(y_n) of elements of F′F' converging weakly to 0, the sequence (tu(yn))(^tu(y_n)) converges strongly to 0 in E′E'. Then the linear mapping uu is compact.

Let us denote by B′B' the unit ball of F′F', endowed with the topology induced by the topology σ(F′,F)\sigma (F',F). Since F is a Banach space of countable type, B′B' is a compact metrisable space (EVT, III, p. 19, cor. 2). Under the assumption made, the restriction of tu^tu to B′B' is a continuous mapping of B′B' into E′E' and tu(B′)^tu(B') is a compact subset of E′E'. By cor. 1, the linear mapping uu is compact.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
