Théories spectrales, chapter III, § 1. Applications linéaires compactes

Let E and F be locally convex spaces. Suppose that E is an approximation space.

a) The set Lf(E;F)\mathscr{L}^f(E; F) is dense in Lpc(E;F)\mathscr{L}_{pc}(E; F);

b) The set Lf(F;E)\mathscr{L}^f(F; E) is dense in Lpc(F;E)\mathscr{L}_{pc}(F; E);

c) Let S\mathfrak{S} be a set of bounded subsets of F and u∈L(F;E)u\in \mathscr{L}(F; E). Suppose that the image under uu of every subset of F belonging to S\mathfrak{S} is precompact. Then uu is adherent to Lf(F;E)\mathscr{L}^f(F; E) for the S\mathfrak{S}-topology (EVT, III, p. 13).

Let vv be an element of L(E;F)\mathscr{L}(E; F). The mapping φ:w↦v∘w\varphi :w\mapsto v\circ w of Lpc(E)\mathscr{L}_{pc}(E) into Lpc(E;F)\mathscr{L}_{pc}(E; F) is continuous (TG, X, p. 5, prop. 3). We have φ(1E)=v\varphi (1_E) =v and φ(Lf(E))⊂Lf(E;F)\varphi (\mathscr{L}^f(E))\subset \mathscr{L}^f(E; F), therefore vv is adherent to Lf(E;F)\mathscr{L}^f(E; F) in Lpc(E;F)\mathscr{L}_{pc}(E; F). This proves a).

Analogously, under the assumptions of c), the mapping ψ:w↦w∘u\psi :w\mapsto w\circ u of Lpc(E)\mathscr{L}_{pc}(E) into LS(F;E)\mathscr{L}_{\mathfrak{S}}(F; E) is continuous (loc. cit.). We have ψ(1E)=u\psi (1_E) =u and ψ(Lf(E))⊂Lf(F;E)\psi (\mathscr{L}^f(E))\subset \mathscr{L}^f(F; E), therefore uu is adherent to Lf(F;E)\mathscr{L}^f(F; E) in LS(F;E)\mathscr{L}_{\mathfrak{S}}(F; E).

The image of a precompact subset of F by a continuous linear mapping of F into E is precompact, therefore b) follows from c).

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
