Théories spectrales, chapter III, § 1. Applications linéaires compactes

Let X be a compact topological space, F a finite subset of C(X)\mathscr{C}(X) and ε>0\varepsilon >0 a real number.

There exist a finite subset X0⊂XX_0\subset X and a linear mapping u:C(X0)→C(X)u:\mathscr{C}(X_0)\rightarrow \mathscr{C}(X) of norm ⩽1\leqslant 1 such that ∥u(f∣X0)−f∥⩽ε\|u(f|X_0)-f\|\leqslant \varepsilon for every f∈Ff\in F.

Since the set F is an equicontinuous subset of C\mathscr{C} (X), there exists a finite covering (Ui)i∈I(U_i)_{i\in I} of X such that, for every i∈Ii\in I and every f∈Ff\in F, the diameter of f(Ui)f(U_i) is ⩽ε\leqslant \varepsilon. For ii in I, choose a point xix_i of UiU_i, and denote by X0X_0 the finite set of the xix_i for i∈Ii\in I.

Let (φi)i∈I(\varphi_i)_{i\in I} be a continuous partition of unity subordinate to (Ui)i∈I(U_i)_{i\in I} (TG, IX, p. 47, th. 3). Define a linear mapping uu of C(X0)\mathscr{C}(X_0) into C(X)\mathscr{C}(X) by putting

u(g)=∑i∈Ig(xi)φi u(g) =\sum_{i\in I}g(x_i)\varphi_i

for every g∈C(X0)g\in \mathscr{C}(X_0). The linear mapping uu has norm ⩽1\leqslant 1 and satisfies ∥u(f∣X0)−f∥⩽ε\|u(f|X_0)-f\|\leqslant \varepsilon for every ff in F, whence the assertion.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
