Spectral Theories, III, p. 115
Let E and F be Banach spaces and a continuous linear mapping from E into F.
a) Prove that the following conditions are equivalent:
(i) The mapping is compact ;
(ii) There exists a sequence tending to 0 in the strong dual of E satisfying sup for every ;
(iii) There exists a closed subspace L of the Banach space and compact linear mappings and such that . (If is compact, apply Cor. 1 of EVT, IV, p. 24 to the image by of the polar of the unit ball of F. Under assumption (ii), let be an element of such that the sequence tends to 0 ; define by and take for L the closure of the image of )
b) If is compact, one has inf(sup), the greatest lower bound being taken over the set of sequences satisfying (ii), and inf(), the greatest lower bound being taken over the set of triples satisfying the conditions of (iii).)
