Théories spectrales, chapter III, § 3. Endomorphismes de Fredholm et endomorphismes de Riesz

Let E and F be locally convex spaces and u∈L(E;F)u\in \mathscr{L}(E; F). Let E1(E_1(resp. F1)F_1) be a closed subspace of finite codimension of E (resp. F). We suppose that uu maps E1E_1 into F1F_1 and denote by u1∈L(E1;F1)u_1\in \mathscr{L}(E_1; F_1) the mapping which coincides with uu on E1E_1. For uu to be a Fredholm mapping, it is necessary and sufficient that u1u_1 be one. We then have

(5) ind(uu)−- ind(u1u_1) == codimF(F1)−_F(F_1)- codimE(E1)_E(E_1).

Let i:E1→Ei: E_1\rightarrow E and j:F1→Fj: F_1\rightarrow F be the canonical injections. They are Fredholm mappings, and we have

ind(ii) == codimE(E1)_E(E_1), ind(jj) == codimF(F1)_F(F_1).

Since j∘u1=u∘ij\circ u_1=u\circ i, we see that uu is a Fredholm mapping if and only if u1u_1 is one (Remarks 3 and 4 of III, p. 41). If this is so, we have

ind(jj) ++ ind(u1u_1) == ind(j∘u1j\circ u_1) == ind(u∘iu\circ i) == ind(uu) ++ ind(ii),

whence formula (5).

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
