Théories spectrales, chapter III, § 3. Endomorphismes de Fredholm et endomorphismes de Riesz

Let E be a vector space and let uu be an endomorphism of E which possesses an index (A, V, p. 126).

If two of the following properties are satisfied, so is the third:

(i) The endomorphism uu is of index 0;

(ii) The nilespace N of uu is finite-dimensional;

(iii) The conilespace I of uu is of finite codimension.

For every integer n⩾0n\geqslant 0, the endomorphism unu^n possesses an index, equal to nn ind(uu) (A, V, p. 127, Lemma 2). The sequence (dim(Ker(unu^n)))n∈N_{n\in\mathbf{N}} of natural integers is increasing; for it to be stationary, it is necessary and sufficient that the nilespace of uu be finite-dimensional. The sequence (codimE_E(Im(unu^n)))n∈N_{n\in\mathbf{N}} of natural integers is increasing; for it to be stationary, it is necessary and sufficient that the conilespace of uu be of finite dimension. Suppose condition (i) satisfied; the relation

dim(Ker(unu^n))−- codimE_E(Im(unu^n)) == ind(unu^n) =n=n ind(uu) =0= 0

then entails the equivalence of conditions (ii) and (iii). Conversely, if conditions (ii) and (iii) are satisfied, this formula entails that the sequence (n(n ind(uu))n∈N_{n\in\mathbf{N}} is stationary, hence uu is of index zero.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
