Théories spectrales, chapter III, § 3. Endomorphismes de Fredholm et endomorphismes de Riesz

Let E be a vector space and let uu be an endomorphism of E which possesses an index. Suppose that the index of uu is zero. Let N be the nilespace of uu and I its conilespace.

a) The space E is then the direct sum of the subspaces N and I (Weyr-Fitting decomposition, cf. A, VIII, §2, no2^o2, p. 25).

b) The endomorphism uu induces, by passing to the subspaces, a nilpotent endomorphism of N and an automorphism uIu_I of I.

c) Let vv denote the endomorphism of E which is zero on N and which coincides with uI−1u^{-1}_I on I. One has u∘v=v∘uu\circ v=v\circ u and the endomorphism 1E−u∘v1_E-u\circ v is the projector with image N and kernel I.

d) Every endomorphism of E which commutes with uu stabilises N and I, and commutes with vv.

The endomorphism uu satisfies the properties of the preceding lemma.

Let n∈Nn\in \mathbf{N} be such that Ker(unu^n) =N= N. Then Ker(umu^m) == Ker(unu^n) for every integer m⩾nm\geqslant n; since ind(umu^m) =m=m ind(uu) =0= 0, this implies Im(umu^m) == Im(unu^n) for m⩾nm\geqslant n, hence I = Im(unu^n). It follows from A, VIII, p. 25, prop. 2 that assertions a) and b) are satisfied.

For every x∈Nx\in N, one has v(x)=0v(x) = 0 and u(x)∈Nu(x)\in N, hence u(v(x))=0u(v(x)) = 0 and v(u(x))=0v(u(x)) = 0. For every x∈Ix\in I, one has u(v(x))=v(u(x))=xu(v(x)) =v(u(x)) =x. This implies that u∘v=v∘uu\circ v=v\circ u and that 1E−u∘v1_E-u\circ v is the projector with image N and kernel I.

Let ww be an endomorphism of E which commutes with uu. Let n∈Nn\in \mathbf{N} be such that N = Ker(unu^n) and I = Im(unu^n). Let x∈Nx\in N; one has un(w(x))=w(un(x))=0u^n(w(x)) =w(u^n(x)) = 0, hence w(x)∈Nw(x)\in N. Let x∈Ix\in I; there exists y∈Ey\in E such that x=un(y)x=u^n(y); then, w(x)=w(un(y))=un(w(y))∈Iw(x) =w(u^n(y)) =u^n(w(y))\in I. This proves that ww stabilises N and I.

Let us prove finally that ww and vv are permutable. For every xx in N, one has v(w(x))=0=w(v(x))v(w(x)) = 0 =w(v(x)). Let x∈Ix\in I; the elements v(w(x))v(w(x)) and w(v(x))w(v(x)) of E belong to I and their images under uu are both equal to w(x)w(x), hence they are equal. By linearity, this implies that vv and ww commute.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
