Théories spectrales, chapter III, § 3. Endomorphismes de Fredholm et endomorphismes de Riesz
Let E be a separated locally convex space and let be an endomorphism of E.
a) Let be a closed subspace of finite codimension of E, stable under . Let denote the element of which coincides with on . Then is a Riesz endomorphism if and only if is one;
b) Suppose that is a Fredholm endomorphism of index 0. Let be the completion of E and let be the extension of by continuity. Then is a Riesz endomorphism if and only if is one;
c) Endow the dual of E with the topology of bounded convergence, the topology of compact convergence, or the weak topology. If is a Riesz endomorphism of E, then is a Riesz endomorphism of .
a) In order that be a Fredholm endomorphism of index zero, it is necessary and sufficient that be one (III, p. 44, prop. 3). On the other hand, for every , one has Ker() Ker(), whence
dim Ker() dim Ker() dim Ker() codim,
therefore the sequence (dim Ker()) is bounded if and only if the sequence (dim Ker()) is. Hence, is a Riesz endomorphism of E if and only if is a Riesz endomorphism of (lemma 2).
b) By prop. 4 of III, p. 44, for every , the mapping is a Fredholm endomorphism of such that Ker() Ker() and ind() ind() ind(). Hence, is a Riesz endomorphism if and only if is a Riesz endomorphism.
c) The transpose is a Fredholm endomorphism of index 0 of III, p. 43, n). Since the kernel of is the orthogonal of the image of (EVT, IV, p. 27, prop. 2), the sequence (Ker()) is stationary. This proves that is a Riesz endomorphism of .
Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
