Théories spectrales, chapter III, § 3. Endomorphismes de Fredholm et endomorphismes de Riesz
Let E be a complex Banach space. In order that an element of be a Riesz endomorphism of E, it is necessary and sufficient that one of the following two mutually exclusive conditions be satisfied:
(i) The endomorphism of E is an automorphism of E;
(ii) The point 0 is an isolated point of Sp() and the projector has finite rank.
When condition (ii) is satisfied, the image of is the nilspace of and the kernel of is the conilspace of .
Every automorphism of E is a Riesz endomorphism of E (III, p. 47, remark 1). If satisfies condition (ii), the kernel F of is a closed vector subspace of finite codimension of E, stable under . Let be the endomorphism of F induced by . Its spectrum is contained in (No. 3 of I, p. 131), hence is an automorphism of F. It follows that is a Riesz endomorphism of E (III, p. 48, prop. 8).
Conversely, let be a Riesz endomorphism of E. Let N denote its nilspace and I its conilspace. By prop. 6 of III, p. 47, the space E is the topological direct sum of N and I, and the mapping defines, by passing to the subspaces, a nilpotent endomorphism of N and an automorphism of I. In particular, we have Sp() and Sp(). If N is zero, then I = E and is an automorphism of E. Otherwise, 0 is an isolated point of Sp() and is the projector with image N and kernel I (prop. 2 of I, p. 129); in particular, it is of finite rank.
Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
