Théories spectrales, chapter III, § 4. Perturbations dans les espaces de Banach

Let E and F be Banach spaces. The set QM(E;F)\mathscr{Q}\mathscr{M}(E; F) is open in L(E;F)\mathscr{L}(E; F). It is the interior of the set of mappings in L(E;F)\mathscr{L}(E; F) whose kernel is of finite dimension.

Let A be the set of continuous linear mappings of E into F whose kernel is of finite dimension.

Let uu be an element of QM(E;F)\mathscr{Q}\mathscr{M}(E; F). Then ((u))>0((u))>0(III, p. 62, remark). Every element v∈L(E;F)v\in \mathscr{L}(E; F) whose distance from uu is <((u))<((u)) then belongs to A (III, p. 65, prop. 9), so that uu is an interior point of A.

Conversely, let uu be an element of A which is not a strict morphism. One has ((u))=0(((u)) = 0 (III, p. 62, Remark). Let vv be an element of L(E;F)\mathscr{L}(E; F) differing from uu by a linear mapping of finite rank; by Corollary 1 of III, p. 40, the morphism vv cannot be strict with closed image; since a strict morphism of E into F has a closed image in F (EVT, IV, p. 28, Theorem 1), this means that vv is not a strict morphism. Hence ((v))=0((v)) = 0. Let ε\varepsilon be a real number >0>0. By the foregoing, Lemma 3 of III, p. 66 enables one to construct by induction a sequence (um)m∈N(u_m)_{m\in\mathbf{N}} of elements of L(E;F)\mathscr{L}(E; F) satisfying the following conditions:

(i) One has u0=uu_0=u;

(ii) For every m⩾0,um+1−umm\geqslant 0,u_{m+1}-u_m is a continuous linear mapping of rank 1 and norm ⩽2−m−1ε\leqslant 2^{-m-1}\varepsilon;

(iii) For every m⩾0m\geqslant 0, the kernel of umu_m has dimension n+mn+m and is contained in that of um+1u_{m+1}.

The sequence (um)(u_m) is a Cauchy sequence in the Banach space L(E;F)\mathscr{L}(E; F). Let u′u' be its limit. The kernel of u′u' contains that of umu_m for every m⩾0m\geqslant 0; it is infinite-dimensional. Since

∥u′−u∥⩽∑m=0∞∥um+1−um∥⩽ε∑m=0∞2−m−1=ε \|u'-u\|\leqslant \sum_{m=0}^{\infty}\|u_{m+1}-u_m\|\leqslant \varepsilon \sum_{m=0}^{\infty}2^{-m-1}=\varepsilon

the distance from uu to the complement of A is less than ε\varepsilon. Since this holds for every ε>0\varepsilon >0, one concludes that uu is not an interior point of A.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
