Théories spectrales, chapter III, § 4. Perturbations dans les espaces de Banach

Let E and F be Banach spaces. The sets E(E;F)\mathscr{E}(E; F) and QE(E;F)\mathscr{Q}\mathscr{E}(E; F) are open in L(E;F)\mathscr{L}(E; F). More precisely, if uu is an element of QE(E;F)\mathscr{Q}\mathscr{E}(E; F) and vv an element of L(E;F)\mathscr{L}(E; F) such that ∥v−u∥<((u))\|v-u\|<((u)), then v∈QE(E;F)v\in \mathscr{Q}\mathscr{E}(E; F) and

dim Ker(vv)⩽\leqslant dim Ker(uu), dim Coker(vv)⩽\leqslant dim Coker(uu),

ind(vv) == ind(uu).

We have seen above that tu∈QM(F′;E′)^tu\in \mathscr{Q}\mathscr{M}(F'; E'). Moreover, for every element vv of L(E;F)\mathscr{L}(E; F), one has ∥tv−tu∥=∥v−u∥\|^tv-^tu\|=\|v-u\| and ((tu))=((u))((^tu)) = ((u)) (EVT, IV, p. 7, prop. 8 and III, p. 63, prop. 8). According to prop. 12, it follows from these relations that if ∥v−u∥<((u))\|v-u\|<((u)), then tv^tv belongs to QM(F′;E′)\mathscr{Q}\mathscr{M}(F'; E') and that one has the inequalities

dim Ker(tv^tv)⩽\leqslant dim Ker(tu^tu), dim Coker(tv^tv)⩽\leqslant dim Coker(tu^tu)

as well as the equality ind(tv^tv) == ind(tu^tu). The proposition then follows from lemma 4.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
