Théories spectrales, chapter III, § 5. Perturbation par une application linéaire compacte

Let E be a Banach space. Let uu be an endomorphism of E, and let A be its commutant in L(E)\mathscr{L}(E). The closure B of π(A)\pi (A) in the algebra C\mathscr{C}alk(E) is a Banach algebra. In order that uu be a Riesz endomorphism of E, it is necessary and sufficient that π(u)\pi (u) be invertible in B.

Since π(A)\pi (A) is a unital subalgebra of C\mathscr{C}alk(E), its closure B is a Banach algebra. If uu is a Riesz endomorphism of E, the element π(u)\pi (u) possesses an inverse in π(A)\pi (A) (cor. 1), hence in B. Conversely, suppose that π(u)\pi (u) has an inverse ss in B. By definition of B, there exists an element vv of A such that

∥s−π(v)∥<1∥π(u)∥ \|s-\pi (v)\|<\frac{1}{\|\pi(u)\|}

whence ∥1E−π(u∘v)∥<1\|1_E-\pi (u\circ v)\|<1. According to prop. 2, the linear mapping u∘vu\circ v is a Riesz endomorphism of E. The same is true of uu since uu and vv commute (III, p. 49, prop. 9).

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
