Théories spectrales, chapter III, § 5. Perturbation par une application linéaire compacte

Let E be a Banach space and let hh be a compact endomorphism of E. Let λ\lambda be an element of K −{0}-\{0\}. Let F be the kernel of 1E−λh1_E-\lambda h and G the kernel of 1E′−λth1_{E'}-\lambda^th.

a) The spaces F and G have the same finite dimension n⩾0n\geqslant 0;

b) For y∈Ey\in E, there exists x∈Ex\in E such that x−λh(x)=yx-\lambda h(x) =y if and only if ⟨y,ℓ⟩=0\langle y, \ell \rangle = 0 for all ℓ∈G\ell \in G;

c) For ℓ∈E′\ell \in E', there exists f∈E′f\in E' such that f−λth(f)=ℓf-\lambda^th(f) =\ell if and only if ⟨x,f⟩=0\langle x, f\rangle = 0 for all x∈Fx\in F.

In particular, one and only one of the following conditions is valid:

(i) The space F is nonzero ;

(ii) For every y∈Ey\in E, there exists x∈Ex\in E such that x−λh(x)=yx-\lambda h(x) =y.

Replacing hh by λh\lambda h, we reduce to the case where λ=1\lambda = 1.

The endomorphism th^th is compact by corollary 1 of III, p. 9. The endomorphisms w=1E−hw= 1_E-h of E and w′=1E′−thw'= 1_{E'}-^th of E′E' are therefore Riesz endomorphisms (cor. 2 of prop. 2 of III, p. 75). In particular, their kernels F and G have finite dimension. Since w′=tww'=^tw and the index of ww is zero, the dimension of F is equal to that of G by formula (3) of III, p. 43.

For an element yy of E, the equation x−h(x)=yx-h(x) =y has a solution x∈Ex\in E if and only if xx belongs to the image of ww. Since the dual of the cokernel of ww identifies with the kernel G of Ker(tw^tw) (EVT, IV, p. 27, prop. 2), this is the case if and only if ⟨y,ℓ⟩=0\langle y, \ell \rangle = 0 for all ℓ∈G\ell \in G.

For an element ℓ\ell of E′E', the equation f−th(f)=ℓf-^th(f) =\ell has a solution f∈E′f\in E' if and only if ff belongs to the image of w′w'. Since the image of tw^tw is the orthogonal of the kernel F of ww (EVT, IV, p. 27, prop. 2) this is the case if and only if ⟨x,f⟩=0\langle x, f\rangle = 0 for all x∈Fx\in F.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
