Spectral Theories, III, p. 137
Let A be a real square matrix of type , positive; let be its spectral radius.
(a) Prove that there exist integers and such that and a partition of I into non-empty parts such that the corresponding block decomposition A = () has the following property:
– The matrices are irreducible ;
– We have if ;
– We have if ;
– For every integer such that , there exists such that .
(b) Determine all the possibilities for such a partition. (Prove in particular that the integers and are uniquely determined, analogously the sets and the sets )
(c) There exists an eigenvector of A associated with the eigenvalue if and only if, for every integer , the spectral radius of is equal to if and is strictly lower than otherwise.
(d) Conclude that in order that A and both admit a strictly positive extremal vector, it is necessary and sufficient that there exist a partition as above such that for and , and such that the matrices for have a spectral radius equal to .
(e) If A and both admit a strictly positive extremal vector, and if has spectral multiplicity equal to 1, then A is irreducible.
