Théories spectrales, chapter IV, § 2. Endomorphismes normaux
Let be a -measurable function from X into a topological space Y, and S its -essential image. The set of elements such that does not belong to S is locally -negligible in X.
Let - S) be the set in question.
First suppose that X is compact and continuous. In this case, the image measure is defined (INT, V, p. 69, § 6, n, def. 1) since is a bounded measure. It follows from the definitions that the -essential image of is the support of the measure cf. INT, V, p. 70, § 6, n, cor. 2), whence - S) = 0 (INT, IV, p. 118, § 2, n, prop. 5).
Now consider the general case. Let C be a compact subset of X, and let be a real number. Since is measurable, there exists a compact subset such that - and such that is continuous (INT, IV, p. 169, § 5, n, prop. 1). One then has
- .
Let be the measure induced by on (INT, IV, p. 186, § 5, n, def. 4). Let be the -essential image of . One has - . By the first case, the set is therefore -negligible, and consequently -negligible (INT, IV, p. 187, § 5, n, lemma 2, (i)). The above inequality becomes ; since and C are arbitrary, the set Z is locally -negligible (INT, IV, p. 172, § 5, n, prop. 5).
Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
