Théories spectrales, chapter IV, § 2. Endomorphismes normaux

Let E be a complex Hilbert space. Let u∈L(E)u\in \mathscr{L}(E) be a normal endomorphism of E. There exist a locally compact topological space X, a positive measure μ\mu on X, an isometric isomorphism θ\theta of L2(X,μ)L^2(X, \mu) onto E, and a continuous bounded function gg on X such that u=θ∘mg∘θ−1u=\theta \circ m_g\circ \theta^{-1}.

If uu admits a cyclic vector xx, one may take X = Sp(uu) and for gg the identity function of X.

It is enough to apply theorem 1 (resp. the corollary of proposition 8) to the involutive subalgebra A of L(E)\mathscr{L}(E) generated by uu, and to put g=π(u)g=\pi (u).

This statement reduces every question concerning a single normal endomorphism of a Hilbert space to a similar question for a multiplication operator, which often simplifies its study (cf. for example exercise 19 of IV, p. 325).

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
