Théories spectrales, chapter IV, § 4. Opérateurs partiels

Let uu be a partial operator with dense domain from E into F.

a) The graph of u∗u^* is equal to s(Γu∘)=s(Γu)∘s(\Gamma^{\circ}_u) =s(\Gamma_u)^{\circ};

b) The partial operator u∗u^* is closed;

c) The kernel of u∗u^* is the orthogonal of the image of uu.

Let us put W=s(Γu)∘W =s(\Gamma_u)^{\circ}. Since the linear mapping ss is unitary, we have W=s(Γu∘)W =s(\Gamma^{\circ}_u).

We have (y,x)∈W(y, x)\in W if and only if

⟨(y,x)∣(−u(x′),x′)⟩=0 \langle (y, x)|(-u(x'), x')\rangle = 0

for all x′∈x'\in dom(uu), that is to say, if

⟨y∣u(x′)⟩=⟨x∣x′⟩ \langle y|u(x')\rangle =\langle x|x'\rangle

for all x′∈x'\in dom(uu). When y∈y\in dom(u∗u^*) and x=u∗(y)x=u^*(y), this property holds (cf. formula (1), p. 236). Conversely, if this condition is satisfied, it follows that ∣⟨y∣u(x′)⟩∣⩽∥x∥∥x′∥|\langle y|u(x')\rangle |\leqslant \|x\| \|x'\| for all x′∈x'\in dom(uu), whence it follows that yy belong to dom(u∗u^*); one then has u∗(y)=xu^*(y) =x. Hence W=Γu∗W = \Gamma_{u^*}.

The operator u∗u^* is closed, because the space s(Γu)∘s(\Gamma_u)^{\circ} is closed in F⊕EF\oplus E.

Let us prove assertion c). If yy is orthogonal to the image of uu, the linear form λy:x↦⟨y∣u(x)⟩\lambda_y:x\mapsto \langle y|u(x)\rangle on D is zero, hence y∈y\in dom(u∗u^*) and u∗(y)=0u^*(y) = 0. Conversely, let y∈y\in dom(u∗u^*). Then u∗(y)=0u^*(y) = 0 if and only if yy is orthogonal to u(x)u(x) for all x∈Dx\in D (formula (1), p. 236).

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
