Théories spectrales, chapter IV, § 4. Opérateurs partiels
Let be an operator with dense domain from E into F. Then has dense domain if and only if is closable. When this is so, the closure of is equal to , and the adjoint of is equal to .
By Prop. 7, the partial operator is closed. Suppose that the domain of is dense in F. Let be the adjoint of ; it is a closed partial operator from E into F. Let us prove that , which will imply that is closable. Let dom(). By definition of , the linear forms on given by and are equal; hence dom() and , whence the assertion.
Conversely, suppose that is closable; one has (Prop. 1 of IV, p. 228). Let be a vector orthogonal to dom(). The element of then belongs to the orthogonal complement of the graph of . But, by Prop. 7, a), one has
It follows therefore that , whence . Since the orthogonal complement of dom() is reduced to 0, the space dom() is dense in F.
Finally, Prop. 7, applied to , implies that
hence , then since is closed.
Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
