Théories spectrales, chapter IV, § 4. Opérateurs partiels

Let uu be a partial operator on E. One says that uu is symmetric if uu has dense domain and if u∗u^* is an extension of uu. One says that uu is self-adjoint if uu has dense domain and u∗=uu^*=u. One says that uu is essentially self-adjoint if it is closable and if the closure u‾\overline{u} of uu is self-adjoint.

One says that uu is a partial operator bounded below if uu is symmetric and if there exists a real number cc such that ⟨x∣u(x)⟩⩾c∥x∥2\langle x|u(x)\rangle \geqslant c\|x\|^2 for every xx belonging to the domain of uu. One then says that cc is a lower bound of uu. If c=0c= 0, one also says that uu is a positive partial operator.

We denote by A(E)\mathscr{A}(E) the set of self-adjoint partial operators on E.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
