Théories spectrales, chapter IV, § 4. Opérateurs partiels

Let v∈L(F;E)v\in \mathscr{L}(F; E) be an injective continuous linear mapping of F into E whose image is dense in E. The adjoint of vv is an injective continuous linear mapping of E into F and one has (v∗)−1=(v−1)∗(v^*)^{-1}= (v^{-1})^*. In particular, if E = F, the endomorphism vv is hermitian if and only if the partial operator v−1v^{-1} is self-adjoint.

The partial operator v−1v^{-1} is a closed operator with dense domain from E into F (Example 2 of IV, p. 228), and the adjoint v∗v^* of vv is a continuous linear mapping from E into F; it is injective, since the image of vv is dense in E (EVT, V, p. 41, prop. 4). Let ss (resp. s′s') be the isometric isomorphism (x,y)↦(−y,x)(x, y)\mapsto (-y, x) of E⊕FE\oplus F onto F⊕EF\oplus E (resp. the isometric isomorphism (y,x)↦(−x,y)(y, x)\mapsto (-x, y) of F⊕EF\oplus E onto E⊕FE\oplus F), and let ι\iota (resp. ι′\iota ') be the isometric isomorphism (y,x)↦(x,y)(y, x)\mapsto (x, y) of F⊕EF\oplus E onto E⊕FE\oplus F (resp. the isometric isomorphism (x,y)↦(y,x)(x, y)\mapsto (y, x) of E⊕FE\oplus F onto F⊕EF\oplus E). Then s∘ι=−ι′∘s′s\circ \iota =-\iota '\circ s', whence

Γ(v−1)∗=s(Γv−1)∘=s(ι(Γv))∘=−ι′(s′(Γv))∘=−ι′(Γv∗)=Γ(v∗)−1 \Gamma_{(v^{-1})^*}=s(\Gamma_{v^{-1}})^{\circ}=s(\iota (\Gamma_v))^{\circ}=-\iota '(s'(\Gamma_v))^{\circ}=-\iota '(\Gamma_{v^*}) = \Gamma_{(v^*)^{-1}}

by prop. 7 of IV, p. 236. The proposition follows.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
