Théories spectrales, chapter IV, § 4. Opérateurs partiels

Let uu be a symmetric partial operator on E, and let λ∈C\lambda \in \mathbf{C}. If u+λ1Eu+\lambda 1_E and u+λ1Eu+\lambda 1_E are surjective, then uu is self-adjoint.

It is enough to prove that dom(u∗u^*)⊂\subset dom(uu). Let x∈x\in dom(u∗u^*). By hypothesis there exists y∈y\in dom(uu) such that u(y)+λy=u∗(x)+λxu(y) +\lambda y=u^*(x) +\lambda x. Let us prove that y=xy=x. For every z∈z\in dom(uu), we have

⟨(u+λ1E)(z)∣x⟩=⟨z∣(u∗+λ‾1E)(x)⟩ \langle (u+\lambda 1_E)(z)|x\rangle =\langle z|(u^*+\overline{\lambda}1_E)(x)\rangle
=⟨z∣(u+λ‾1E)(y)⟩=⟨(u+λ1E)(z)∣y⟩ =\langle z|(u+\overline{\lambda}1_E)(y)\rangle =\langle (u+\lambda 1_E)(z)|y\rangle

since uu is symmetric. Since the operator u+λ1Eu+\lambda 1_E is surjective, we indeed have y=xy=x, hence x∈x\in dom(uu).

We shall see later (cf. prop. 17 of IV, p. 248) that if λ∈C−R\lambda \in \mathbf{C}-\mathbf{R}, then the converse is true.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
