Théories spectrales, chapter IV, § 4. Opérateurs partiels

Let uu be a closed operator with dense domain on a complex Banach space E. The resolvent set of uu is the set of complex numbers λ\lambda such that the partial operator λ1E−u\lambda 1_E-u is injective and its inverse (λ1E−u)−1(\lambda 1_E-u)^{-1} belongs to L(E)\mathscr{L}(E).

The spectrum of uu, denoted by Sp(uu), is the complement of the resolvent set in C\mathbf{C}.

If λ∈C−\lambda \in \mathbf{C}- Sp(uu), we denote by R(u,λ)∈L(E)R(u, \lambda )\in \mathscr{L}(E) the inverse of λ1E−u\lambda 1_E-u. The mapping of C−\mathbf{C}- Sp(uu) into L(E)\mathscr{L}(E) which associates R(u,λ)R(u, \lambda ) to λ\lambda is called the resolvent of uu.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
