Théories spectrales, chapter IV, § 4. Opérateurs partiels

Let E be a complex Banach space. Let uu be a closed operator with dense domain on E and U its resolvent set.

a) For every λ∈U\lambda \in U, the open disc in C\mathbf{C} with center λ\lambda and radius ∥R(u,λ)∥−1\|R(u, \lambda )\|^{-1} is contained in U;

b) The set U is open in C\mathbf{C};

c) Suppose that Sp(uu) is not empty. Let λ∈U\lambda \in U and denote by δ\delta the distance in C\mathbf{C} from λ\lambda to the spectrum of uu. One has δ>0\delta >0 and ∥R(u,λ)∥⩾1/δ\|R(u, \lambda )\|\geqslant 1/\delta;

d) The mapping λ↦R(u,λ)\lambda \mapsto R(u, \lambda ) is a holomorphic mapping of U into L(E)\mathscr{L}(E). For every integer k∈Nk\in \mathbf{N} and every λ∈U\lambda \in U, one has

∂k∂λkR(u,λ)=(−1)kk\frac{\partial^k}{\partial \lambda^k}R(u, \lambda ) = (-1)^kk!R(u,λu, \lambda )k+1^{k+1}.

Let λ∈U\lambda \in U. For every μ∈C\mu\in \mathbf{C} such that ∥(μ−λ)1E∥<∥R(u,λ)∥−1\|(\mu-\lambda )1_E\|<\|R(u, \lambda )\|^{-1}, lemma 4 applied to the injective partial operator λ1E−u\lambda 1_E-u and to v=(μ−λ)1Ev= (\mu-\lambda )1_E implies that the partial operator μ1E−u=λ1E−u+v\mu1_E-u=\lambda 1_E-u+v is injective and has a continuous inverse. This implies a). According to loc. cit., one also has the formula

R(u,μ)=R(u,λ)∘∑k∈N(λ−μ)kR(u,λ)k R(u, \mu) = R(u, \lambda )\circ \sum_{k\in\mathbf{N}}(\lambda -\mu)^kR(u, \lambda )^k

which implies that the resolvent of uu is holomorphic in U.

Assertion b) results at once from a). If Sp(uu) is nonempty, the distance from λ\lambda to Sp(uu) is strictly positive (TG, IX, p. 13, Prop. 2), whence c).

The last part of assertion d) is proved by induction on kk, the case k=1k= 1 being a consequence of formula (8), p. 245.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
