Théories spectrales, chapter IV, § 4. Opérateurs partiels

Let uu be a closed operator with dense domain on a complex Hilbert space E. The spectrum of u∗u^* is the image of the spectrum of uu under complex conjugation and, for every element λ\lambda of the resolvent set of uu, one has R(u,λ)∗=R(u∗,λ)R(u, \lambda )^*= R(u^*, \lambda ). In particular, if uu is self-adjoint, the endomorphism R(u,λ)R(u, \lambda ) is normal for every λ∉\lambda \notin Sp(uu).

Let λ∈C−\lambda \in \mathbf{C}- Sp(uu) be an element of the resolvent set of uu. One has u=λ1E−R(u,λ)−1u=\lambda 1_E-R(u, \lambda )^{-1}, hence

u∗=λ‾1E−(R(u,λ)−1)∗=λ‾1E−(R(u,λ)∗)−1 u^*=\overline{\lambda}1_E-(R(u, \lambda )^{-1})^*=\overline{\lambda}1_E-(R(u, \lambda )^*)^{-1}

(IV, p. 236 and prop. 9 of IV, p. 239). Applying remark 5, we deduce that λ‾∈C−\overline{\lambda}\in \mathbf{C}- Sp(u∗u^*) and that R(u,λ)∗=R(u∗,λ)R(u, \lambda )^*= R(u^*, \lambda ). Consequently, the spectrum of u∗u^* is contained in the image of Sp(uu) under complex conjugation. We obtain equality by applying this property to u∗u^*, since u∗∗=uu^{**}=u (cor. to prop. 8 of IV, p. 237). The last assertion then results from formula (9), p. 245.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
