Théories spectrales, chapter IV, § 4. Opérateurs partiels

Let E be a complex Hilbert space and let uu be a self-adjoint partial operator on E.

a) The spectrum of uu is contained in R\mathbf{R};

b) If uu is positive, then the spectrum of uu is contained in R+\mathbf{R}_+;

c) Suppose that E is nonzero. Let λ∉\lambda \notin Sp(uu) and let δ>0\delta >0 be the distance from λ\lambda to the spectrum of uu. One has ∥R(u,λ)∥=δ−1\|R(u, \lambda )\|=\delta^{-1}.

Let (a,b)∈R×R(a, b)\in \mathbf{R}\times \mathbf{R} and λ=a+ib\lambda =a+ib. Let x∈x\in dom(uu). Since uu is self-adjoint, one has ⟨x∣u(x)⟩∈R\langle x|u(x)\rangle \in \mathbf{R}, whence

∥u(x)−λx∥2=∥u(x)∥2−2a⟨x∣u(x)⟩+(a2+b2)∥x∥2 \|u(x)-\lambda x\|^2=\|u(x)\|^2-2a\langle x|u(x)\rangle + (a^2+b^2)\|x\|^2
=∥u(x)−λx∥2 =\|u(x)-\lambda x\|^2

Suppose that b≠0b\not = 0. One then obtains

∥u(x)−λx∥2=∥u(x)−λx∥2⩾(∥u(x)∥−a∥x∥)2+b2∥x∥2 \|u(x)-\lambda x\|^2=\|u(x)-\lambda x\|^2\geqslant (\|u(x)\| -a\|x\|)^2+b^2\|x\|^2
⩾b2∥x∥2 \geqslant b^2\|x\|^2

By Lemma 5, one therefore has λ∉\lambda \notin Sp(uu), whence assertion a).

Suppose that uu is also positive. If b=0b= 0 and a<0a <0, one analogously obtains for x∈x\in dom(uu) the inequality

∥u(x)−λx∥2=∥u(x)−λx∥2⩾(∥u(x)∥−a∥x∥)2⩾a2∥x∥2 \|u(x)-\lambda x\|^2=\|u(x)-\lambda x\|^2\geqslant (\|u(x)\| -a\|x\|)^2\geqslant a^2\|x\|^2

therefore λ∉\lambda \notin Sp(uu) ((loc. cit.)), which proves b).

Finally, let us prove c). By Prop. 16, the resolvent R(u,λ)R(u, \lambda ) is a normal endomorphism of E. Its norm is therefore equal to its spectral radius (Cor. 1 of I, p. 108), whence

∥R(u,λ)∥=\|R(u, \lambda )\|= supμ∈Sp(R(u,λ))∣μ∣_{\mu\in Sp(R(u,\lambda))}|\mu|

(Th. 1 of I, p. 24). The spectrum of R(u,λ)R(u, \lambda ) cannot be reduced to {0}\{0\}, for in that case one would have ∥R(u,λ)∥=0\|R(u, \lambda )\|= 0, hence the image dom(uu) of R(u,λ)R(u, \lambda ) would be zero, and E likewise. Prop. 15 therefore implies that

∥R(u,λ)∥=\|R(u, \lambda )\|= supμ∈Sp(u)1∣λ−μ∣=1δ_{\mu\in Sp(u)}\frac{1}{|\lambda-\mu|}=\frac{1}{\delta}.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
