Théories spectrales, chapter IV, § 4. Opérateurs partiels

Let uu be a self-adjoint operator on E.

a) The residual spectrum of uu is empty;

b) For all λ≠μ\lambda \not =\mu in C\mathbf{C}, the eigenspaces of uu corresponding to λ\lambda and μ\mu are orthogonal.

Let us prove a). Let λ\lambda belong to the spectrum of uu; it is a real number (Prop. 17). One has Ker(λ1E−u\lambda 1_E-u) == Im(λ1E−u\lambda 1_E-u)∘^{\circ} (Prop. 7 of IV, p. 236), therefore λ\lambda is not an eigenvalue of uu if the partial operator λ1E−u\lambda 1_E-u has dense image. By definition this implies that the residual spectrum of uu is empty.

Let us prove b). By the proposition, we may suppose that λ\lambda and μ\mu are real. Let x∈x\in dom(uu) be such that u(x)=λxu(x) =\lambda x and y∈y\in dom(uu) be such that u(y)=μyu(y) =\mu y. We then have

λ⟨x∣y⟩=⟨u(x)∣y⟩=⟨x∣u(y)⟩=μ⟨x∣y⟩ \lambda \langle x|y\rangle =\langle u(x)|y\rangle =\langle x|u(y)\rangle =\mu\langle x|y\rangle

whence ⟨x∣y⟩=0\langle x|y\rangle = 0.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
