Remark

If $u$ is a closed symmetric non-self-adjoint operator, its spectrum is not contained in $\mathbf{R}($cf. cor. 10 of IV, p. 257 below), and it is possible that the eigenspaces of $u$ relative to $\lambda$ and $\overline{\lambda}$ are not orthogonal (exercise 11 of IV, p. 347).
