Théories spectrales, chapter IV, § 4. Opérateurs partiels

Let E be a complex Banach space and uu a closed partial operator on E. Let ε∈R+∗\varepsilon \in \mathbf{R}^*_+. Every bounded connected component of PSpε(u)_{\varepsilon}(u) meets the spectrum of uu.

Let U be a connected component of PSpε(u)_{\varepsilon}(u) which does not meet Sp(uu). The set U is open and closed in PSpε(u)_{\varepsilon}(u), and its closure U in C\mathbf{C} therefore satisfies U∩U\cap PSpε(u)=U_{\varepsilon}(u) = U.

Since Sp(uu) is contained in PSpε(u)_{\varepsilon}(u) and U does not meet Sp(uu), this equality proves that the set U is disjoint from Sp(uu), hence contained in the resolvent set of uu. Moreover, it implies that the set U‾−\overline{U}- U does not meet PSpε(u)_{\varepsilon}(u).

One therefore has ∥R(u,λ)∥⩽ε−1\|R(u, \lambda )\|\leqslant \varepsilon^{-1} for every λ\lambda in U‾−\overline{U}- U, whereas ∥R(u,λ)∥>ε−1\|R(u, \lambda )\|> \varepsilon^{-1} for λ∈U\lambda \in U. If the set U is bounded, its closure U‾\overline{U} is compact and there exists λ0∈U‾\lambda_0\in \overline{U} such that ∥R(u,λ)∥⩽∥R(u,λ0)∥\|R(u, \lambda )\|\leqslant \|R(u, \lambda_0)\| for λ∈U\lambda \in U. The foregoing implies that λ0∈U\lambda_0\in U, which contradicts the maximum principle (VAR, R1, p. 29, 3.3.7) since the resolvent of uu is holomorphic in the resolvent set of uu (Prop. 14 of IV, p. 246).

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
