Théories spectrales, chapter IV, § 4. Opérateurs partiels

Let gg be a μ\mu-measurable function on X.

a) The spectrum of mgm_g is the essential μ\mu-image S of gg;

b) Let λ∈C−\lambda \in \mathbf{C}- Sp(mgm_g). The resolvent R(mg,λ)R(m_g, \lambda ) is the multiplication operator mhm_h, where hh is the function on X defined by h(x)=0h(x) = 0 if g(x)=λg(x) =\lambda and h(x)=(λ−g(x))−1h(x) = (\lambda -g(x))^{-1} otherwise.

Let us prove that C−\mathbf{C}- S is contained in the resolvent set of mgm_g. Let λ∈C−\lambda \in \mathbf{C}- S. There exists an open neighbourhood U of λ\lambda such that the subset Y=g−1(U)Y =\overset{-1}{g}(U) of X is locally μ\mu-negligible. The function kk defined on X by k(x)=(λ−g(x))−1k(x) = (\lambda -g(x))^{-1} if x∉Yx \notin Y and k(x)=0k(x) = 0 if x∈Yx\in Y then belong to L∞(X,μ)\mathscr{L}^{\infty}(X, \mu) (Lemma 5 of IV, p. 184); the multiplication operator by kk is therefore an endomorphism of L2(X,μ)L^2(X, \mu).

Since ∣gk∣⩽1+∣λk∣|gk|\leqslant 1 +|\lambda k|, we have

∣gkf∣⩽∣f∣+∣λkf∣ |gkf|\leqslant |f|+|\lambda kf|

for f∈L2(X,μ)f\in \mathscr{L}^2(X, \mu), which implies that the image of mkm_k is contained in the domain of mgm_g. Conversely, let f∈L2(X,μ)f\in \mathscr{L}^2(X, \mu) whose class f~\widetilde{f} belongs to the domain of mgm_g. Outside the locally μ\mu-negligible set Y, we have f(x)=k(x)(λ−g(x))f(x)f(x) =k(x)(\lambda -g(x))f(x), hence f~\widetilde{f} is in the image of mkm_k. The same formula proves that λ\lambda belongs to the resolvent set of mgm_g and that R(mg,λ)=mkR(m_g, \lambda ) =m_k. Since the set Y is locally μ\mu-negligible, the multiplication operator mkm_k coincides with the operator mhm_h described in assertion b).

Let us prove conversely that C−\mathbf{C}- Sp(mgm_g) is contained in C−\mathbf{C}- S. Let λ∈C−\lambda \in \mathbf{C}- Sp(mgm_g). Let M>∥R(mg,λ)∥M>\|R(m_g, \lambda )\| be a real number. Let us denote by Y the set of x∈Xx\in X such that ∣λ−g(x)∣<M−1|\lambda -g(x)|<M^{-1}. Let us prove that Y is locally μ\mu-negligible, which will imply that λ\lambda does not belong to S, and will complete the proof.

Let K be a compact subset of X. Let φ\varphi be the characteristic function of Y∩KY\cap K; it is an element of L2(X,μ)\mathscr{L}^2(X, \mu), and we denote by φ~\widetilde{\varphi} its class in L2(X,μ)L^2(X, \mu). Let ψ\psi be a function in L2(X,μ)\mathscr{L}^2(X, \mu) whose class in L2(X,μ)L^2(X, \mu) is R(mg,λ)(φ~)R(m_g, \lambda )(\widetilde{\varphi}). We have R(mg,λ)(φ~)∈R(m_g, \lambda )(\widetilde{\varphi})\in dom(mgm_g) and (λ−mg)(R(mg,λ)(φ~))=φ~(\lambda -m_g)(R(m_g, \lambda )(\widetilde{\varphi})) =\widetilde{\varphi}, hence (λ−g(x))ψ(x)=1(\lambda -g(x))\psi (x) = 1 for μ\mu-almost all x∈Y∩Kx\in Y\cap K. This implies

∥R(mg,λ)∥2∥φ~∥2⩾∥R(mg,λ)(φ~)∥2⩾M2μ(Y∩K)=M2∥φ~∥2 \|R(m_g, \lambda )\|^2\|\widetilde{\varphi}\|^2\geqslant \|R(m_g, \lambda )(\widetilde{\varphi})\|^2\geqslant M^2\mu(Y\cap K) = M^2\|\widetilde{\varphi}\|^2

In view of the choice of M, this means that φ\varphi is zero μ\mu-almost everywhere. Thus, the set Y∩KY\cap K is μ\mu-negligible. Therefore the set Y is locally μ\mu-negligible (INT, IV, p. 172, § 5, no2^o2, Prop. 5).

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
