Théories spectrales, chapter IV, § 4. Opérateurs partiels

Let uu be a closed symmetric operator on a complex Hilbert space E. Let E+=E_+= Ker(u∗−iu^*-i) and E−=E_-= Ker(u∗+iu^*+i). The pair (E+,E−)(E_+,E_-) of subspaces of dom(u∗u^*) is called the deficiency pair of uu. The subspaces E+E_+ and E−E_- are closed subspaces of E (prop. 3 of IV, p. 229). The pair (dim(E+_+), dim(E−_-)) of the Hilbert dimensions of these subspaces is called the deficiency index of uu.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
