Théories spectrales, chapter IV, § 4. Opérateurs partiels

Let uu be a closed symmetric operator on E. Then uu is self-adjoint if and only if the deficiency index of uu is equal to (0,0)(0,0).

In fact, the symmetric operator uu is self-adjoint if and only if dom(u∗u^*) == dom(uu); now the proposition proves that dom(u∗u^*) is the Hilbert sum of dom(uu) and of the deficiency subspaces of uu.

Let uu be a closed symmetric partial operator. The spectrum of uu is contained in R\mathbf{R} if and only if uu is self-adjoint. In fact, it is known that Sp(uu)⊂R\subset \mathbf{R} if uu is self-adjoint (Prop. 17 of IV, p. 248); if uu is not self-adjoint, one of the subspaces Ker(u∗+iu^*+i) or Ker(u∗−iu^*-i) is nonzero, hence the image of u+iu+i or of u−iu-i is a proper subspace of E (Prop. 25 of IV, p. 256), so that ii or −i-i belongs to Sp(uu).

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
