Théories spectrales, chapter IV, § 4. Opérateurs partiels

Let uu be a symmetric operator on E. The following conditions are equivalent:

(i) The operator uu is essentially self-adjoint;

(ii) The spaces Ker(u∗+iu^*+i) and Ker(u∗−iu^*-i) are zero;

(iii) The spaces Im(u+iu+i) and Im(u−iu-i) are dense in E;

(iv) The partial symmetric operator uu has a unique self-adjoint extension.

Conditions (ii) and (iii) are equivalent by prop. 7, c) of IV, p. 236.

The partial operator uu is essentially self-adjoint if and only if u‾\overline{u} is self-adjoint, that is to say if Ker(u‾∗−i\overline{u}^*-i) == Ker(u‾∗+i\overline{u}^*+i) ={0}=\{0\} (cor. of prop. 26). Since u‾∗=u∗\overline{u}^*=u^* (prop. 8 of IV, p. 237), condition (i) is therefore equivalent to condition (ii). Moreover, the preceding corollary shows that (ii) implies that uu has a unique self-adjoint extension, which is condition (iv).

Finally, suppose that uu has a unique self-adjoint extension vv. Then the same is true of u‾\overline{u}, since every self-adjoint extension of u‾\overline{u} is one of uu, hence is equal to vv. By the preceding corollary, the spaces Ker(u‾∗+i\overline{u}^*+i) and Ker(u‾∗−i\overline{u}^*-i) must be zero, whence condition (ii), using again u‾∗=u∗\overline{u}^*=u^*.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
