Théories spectrales, chapter IV, § 5. Opérateurs partiels normaux et théorème spectral

The mapping f↦f(u)f\mapsto f(u) of Lu\mathscr{L}_u(Sp(uu)) into the set of normal partial operators on E defined by prop. 3 of IV, p. 271 is called the universally measurable functional calculus mapping associated with uu.

More generally, let T be a set and g:g: Sp(uu)×T→C\times T\rightarrow \mathbf{C} a mapping; let t∈Tt\in T be such that the function gt:z↦g(z,t)g_t:z\mapsto g(z, t) is universally measurable on Sp(uu). We then write g(u,t)=gt(u)g(u, t) =g_t(u).

Formula (7) implies in particular that (8) ∥f(u)(y)∥2=∫∣f∣2μy\|f(u)(y)\|^2=\int|f|^2\mu_y

Sp(uu)

for every f∈Luf\in \mathscr{L}_u(Sp(uu)) and every y∈Dfy\in D_f. Taking f=1f= 1, we deduce that μy\mu_y is a positive measure of total mass ∥y∥2\|y\|^2.

If uu is a normal partial operator on a Hilbert space E and f∈Kf\in \mathscr{K} (Sp(uu)), then Df=ED_f= E and the partial operator f(u)f(u) is then continuous, since

∥f(u)y∥⩽∥f∥∞∥y∥ \|f(u)y\|\leqslant \|f\|_{\infty}\|y\|

for every y∈Ey\in E by (8). The endomorphism f(u)f(u) coincides with that of Definition 3 of IV, p. 268.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
