Théories spectrales, chapter IV, § 5. Opérateurs partiels normaux et théorème spectral
Let be a normal partial operator on the Hilbert space E. It is supposed that E is nonzero.
a) The spectrum of is nonempty;
b) For every Sp(), the norm of the resolvent is equal to , where is the distance in from to the spectrum of .
c) For every 0, the -pseudospectrum PSp is the set of at distance from Sp().
Suppose that the spectrum of is empty. Then is injective, and the endomorphism is normal (cor. 1, c) and a)). We have Sp() (prop. 15, a)), hence Sp() I, p. 26, cor. 1). Since is normal, this implies that I, p. 110, example 1), which is a contradiction since E is not zero.
To prove b), one may suppose that is the multiplication operator on , where is a continuous function on a locally compact topological space X endowed with a positive measure (th. 1 of IV, p. 266). Let Sp() and let be the distance from to the spectrum of . To prove that , one is reduced to the case by replacing by . The real number is then the distance from 0 to the spectrum of . Since the latter coincides with the -essential image of , the result is a consequence of lemma 3 of IV, p. 182.
Finally, assertion c) follows from b) and from the definition of PSp (IV, p. 250, def. 9).
Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
