Théories spectrales, chapter IV, § 5. Opérateurs partiels normaux et théorème spectral
Let A be a closed subset of Sp(). Let be the characteristic function of A and the spectral projector of defined by A. Let us denote by the image of . It is a closed subspace of E.
a) The subspace is the space of the such that the support of the spectral measure of relative to is contained in A;
b) If A is bounded in , then is contained in the domain of ;
c) For every belonging to the domain of , one has dom() and , in particular if dom().
For in E, one denotes by the spectral measure of relative to .
Let us prove a). Let be an element of . Let A and U a relatively compact open neighbourhood of which does not meet A. For every function with support contained in U, one has
Sp() Sp() according to formula (10). This means that does not belong to the support of . Consequently, the support of is contained in A.
Conversely, let be such that the support of is contained in A. We have
Sp() Sp()
(loc. cit.) therefore and consequently , that is to say .
Assertion b) follows from a) and from the remark in IV, p. 273.
Let us prove c). The domain of is the set of such that the identity function of Sp() belongs to (Sp()) loc. cit.). Since for (cor. of Prop. 5 of IV, p. 275), one has dom() if dom().
Let dom() and ; one has dom() according to c). The spectral measure of relative to is Idloc. cit.). Since has support in A, the same is true of , hence according to a).
Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
