Théories spectrales, chapter IV, § 5. Opérateurs partiels normaux et théorème spectral

Let λ∈C\lambda \in \mathbf{C}. One has λ∈\lambda \in Sp(uu) if and only if, for every open neighbourhood V of λ\lambda in C\mathbf{C}, the spectral projector pVp_V of uu relative to V is nonzero.

If λ∉\lambda \notin Sp(uu), then there exists an open neighbourhood V of λ\lambda in C\mathbf{C} which does not meet Sp(uu), and then pV=p∅=0p_V=p_{\emptyset}= 0.

Conversely, suppose that there exists an open neighbourhood V of λ\lambda in C\mathbf{C} such that pV=0p_V= 0. Let c>0c >0 be such that the disc with center λ\lambda and radius cc is contained in V.

Let x∈x\in dom(uu) and let μx\mu_x be the spectral measure of xx relative to uu. Since μx(V)=⟨x∣pV(x)⟩=0\mu_x(V) =\langle x|p_V(x)\rangle = 0, one computes

∫C∣z−λ∣2dμx(z)=∫C−V∣z−λ∣2dμx(z) \int_{\mathbf{C}}|z-\lambda |^2d\mu_x(z) =\int_{\mathbf{C}-V}|z-\lambda |^2d\mu_x(z)
⩾c2∫C−Vdμx(z)=c2∫Cdμx(z)=c2∥x∥2 \geqslant c^2\int_{\mathbf{C}-V}d\mu_x(z) =c^2\int_{\mathbf{C}}d\mu_x(z) =c^2\|x\|^2

But, on the other hand, one has

∥u(x)−λx∥2=∫C∣z−λ∣2dμx(z)=∥u∗(x)−λx∥2 \|u(x)-\lambda x\|^2=\int_{\mathbf{C}}|z-\lambda |^2d\mu_x(z) =\|u^*(x)-\lambda x\|^2

(formula (8), p. 272), whence ∥u(x)−λx∥⩾c∥x∥\|u(x)-\lambda x\|\geqslant c\|x\| and ∥u∗(x)−λx∥⩾c∥x∥\|u^*(x)-\lambda x\|\geqslant c\|x\|. It follows that λ\lambda belongs to the resolvent set of uu (Lemma 5 of IV, p. 248). This concludes the proof.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
