Théories spectrales, chapter IV, § 5. Opérateurs partiels normaux et théorème spectral

Let D be a vector subspace of E. A partial Hermitian form on E with domain D is a correspondence q=(Γ,E×E,C)q= (\Gamma ,E\times E,\mathbf{C}) whose domain of definition is D×DD\times D, whose graph Γ is functional, and such that the mapping from D×DD\times D into C\mathbf{C} defined by Γ is a Hermitian form. We write dom(qq) =D= D.

We say that qq is a positive partial form if the Hermitian form which it defines is positive.

Let uu be a self-adjoint partial operator on E. For every elements xx and yy of E, we denote by μx,y\mu_{x,y} (resp. μx\mu_x) the spectral measure of (x,y)(x, y) (resp. of xx) relative to uu.

Let (j,∣u∣)(j,|u|) be the polar decomposition of uu (Def. 7 of IV, p. 290). Let us denote by D′D' the domain of ∣u∣1/2|u|^{1/2}. By definition, this is the space of the x∈Ex\in E such that the function z↦∣z∣z\mapsto |z| is integrable on Sp(uu) with respect to the measure μx\mu_x. It contains dom(uu).

Let (x,y)∈D′×D′(x, y)\in D'\times D'. The identity function on Sp(uu) is integrable with respect to the measure μx,y\mu_{x,y} (Prop. 4, b) of IV, p. 271); we put

qu(x,y)=∫tdμx,y(t) q_u(x, y) =\int t d\mu_{x,y}(t)

Sp(uu)

If y∈y\in dom(uu), we have qu(x,y)=⟨x∣u(y)⟩q_u(x, y) =\langle x|u(y)\rangle by formula (6) of IV, p. 271. The mapping quq_u is a Hermitian form on D′D'. It defines a partial Hermitian form on E, said to be associated with uu. If the operator uu is positive, then the form quq_u is a positive partial Hermitian form.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
