Théories spectrales, chapter IV, § 5. Opérateurs partiels normaux et théorème spectral

Let qq be a closed positive partial form with dense domain on E and uu the partial operator representing qq.

a) The domain of uu is dense in the Hilbert space EqE_q;

b) The partial operator uu is self-adjoint and positive.

Since qq is closed, the prehilbertian space EqE_q of Definition 9 is a Hilbert space.

Let us prove that the partial operator u+1Eu+ 1_E with domain dom(uu) is bijective. Since

⟨x∣(u+1E)(x)⟩=q(x,x)+∥x∥2⩾∥x∥2 \langle x|(u+ 1_E)(x)\rangle =q(x, x) +\|x\|^2\geqslant \|x\|^2

for every x∈x\in dom(uu), this partial operator is injective.

Let y∈Ey\in E. The linear form on EqE_q defined by x↦⟨y∣x⟩x\mapsto \langle y|x\rangle is continuous since ∥x∥⩽∥x∥q\|x\|\leqslant \|x\|_q. There therefore exists y′∈Eqy'\in E_q such that

⟨y∣x⟩=(y′∣x)q=⟨y′∣x⟩+q(y′,x) \langle y|x\rangle = (y'|x)_q=\langle y'|x\rangle +q(y', x)

for every x∈Eqx\in E_q (EVT, V, p. 15, Theorem 3). By definition, this means that y′y' belongs to the domain of the partial operator u~\widetilde{u} representing the partial form (x,y)↦(x∣y)q(x, y)\mapsto (x|y)_q with domain dom(qq), and that u~(y′)=y\widetilde{u}(y') =y. Since u~=u+1E\widetilde{u}=u+ 1_E by the above remark, it follows that the partial operator u+1Eu+ 1_E is also surjective, hence bijective.

Let us prove that the domain of uu is dense in EqE_q. Let y∈Eqy\in E_q be orthogonal to dom(uu) in EqE_q. There exists y′∈y'\in dom(uu) such that u(y′)+y′=yu(y')+y'=y. We then have

0=(y∣y′)q=⟨y∣y′⟩+q(y,y′)=⟨y∣y′+u(y′)⟩=∥y∥2 0 = (y|y')_q=\langle y|y'\rangle +q(y, y') =\langle y|y'+u(y')\rangle =\|y\|^2

therefore y=0y= 0. Assertion a) is therefore proved.

Since dom(qq) is dense in E and ∥x∥⩽∥x∥q\|x\|\leqslant \|x\|_q for every x∈x\in dom(qq), assertion a) implies that dom(uu) is dense in E. Since the form qq is Hermitian (resp. positive), for all xx and yy in dom(uu), we have

⟨y∣u(x)⟩=q(y,x)=q(x,y)=⟨x∣u(y)⟩‾=⟨u(y)∣x⟩ \langle y|u(x)\rangle =q(y, x) =q(x, y) =\overline{\langle x|u(y)\rangle}=\langle u(y)|x\rangle

(resp. ⟨x∣u(x)⟩=q(x,x)⩾0\langle x|u(x)\rangle =q(x, x)\geqslant 0), so that uu is symmetric (resp. positive). Finally, the partial operator u+1Eu+ 1_E is self-adjoint by the corollary to proposition 10 of IV, p. 240, and the same is true of uu.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
