Théories spectrales, chapter IV, § 5. Opérateurs partiels normaux et théorème spectral

Let uu be a normal partial operator on E. A complex number λ∈\lambda \in Sp(uu) belongs to the discrete spectrum of uu if λ\lambda is isolated in Sp(uu) and if λ\lambda is an eigenvalue of finite multiplicity.

We denote by Sps(u)_s(u) the discrete spectrum of uu. Its complement in Sp(uu) is called the essential spectrum of uu and denoted by Spe(u)_e(u).

The essential spectrum of a normal partial operator uu on E is closed in C\mathbf{C}, since Sp(uu) is closed in C\mathbf{C} and the complement of the essential spectrum is open in Sp(uu). The discrete spectrum of uu is not necessarily closed in C\mathbf{C} (exercise 36 of IV, p. 369).

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
