Théories spectrales, chapter IV, § 5. Opérateurs partiels normaux et théorème spectral
The set Sp is countable, discrete and closed in . It is the set of values of a strictly increasing sequence of positive real numbers; if Sp is infinite, then the sequence converges to .
Let us set T = Sp. It is a closed and discrete subset of by definition. For every integer , the set Sp is compact and discrete, hence finite. Since T is the union of these sets for , the set T is countable.
This concludes the proof if Sp is finite. If Sp is infinite, one concludes by applying Lemma 2 of III, p. 90 to the image S of T by the mapping .
For every integer such that Card(Sp), let denote the multiplicity of the eigenvalue of . Let us set . Let be the sum of the multiplicities . It is the Hilbert dimension of , if one agrees to say that a space of infinite Hilbert dimension is of dimension .
For every integer such that , one defines , where is the unique integer such that
If satisfies , one sets . This case can occur only if Sp is finite, in which case is finite, since it is assumed that E is of infinite dimension.
By construction, the sequence is increasing and, for every element of Sp, the number of integers such that is equal to the multiplicity of as an eigenvalue of . The sequence tends to if and only if the essential spectrum of is empty.
For every , let (resp. ) denote the set of vector subspaces of dimension (resp. the set of vector subspaces dom() of dimension ).
Let be such that and let . One says that F is adapted to if F admits an orthonormal basis such that for .
Let be adapted to . The space F is contained in ; it is generated by eigenvectors of for eigenvalues , and it contains the eigenspaces corresponding to the eigenvalues . Moreover, for every universally measurable subset A of Sp(), the space F is stable under the spectral projector defined by A (prop. 9, c) of IV, p. 278).
Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
